Miami traffic

Traffic in Miami is horrendous. There's construction on every route that I can possibly take to work or to go home. It is beyond ridiculous. A typical 15 minute trip to work in the morning now takes 45 minutes.

Whe will the madness end? On my route, I get to see precious historical Miami areas bulldozed or paved over. How lovely. I won't even go into the decimation of the Overtown area to make room for condos and loft apartments that very few will be able to afford. That is definitely another blog topic for another time in the near future.

The traffic frustration is compounded by the number of nhorrible and rage-filled drivers. I know that the construction will end; the question is when?

First, Bo Derek, now Jessica Simpson

OK, first there was Bo Derek in the movie "10", with her cornrowed and braided blonde hair and beads bouncing in the air as she ran down the beach; now there's Jessica Simpson and her clip on hair. Yeah, that's right. I mean, come on, Bo Derek made braids acceptable to white people now let's see how many white women are subjected to hair weave jokes after Jessica's new entrepreneural venture.

Wanda Sykes - Sick and Tired

I am loving this woman Wanda Sykes. She is smart, disarmingly funny and refreshing. I missed the broadcast of her latest special but I'll catch the replay. Hit me back and let me know what you think.

Self-Hatred

The proliferation of the effect of white supremacy on non-whites amazes me each day. Over the past month or so, I've heard comments by intelligent, supposedly learned individuals that have saddened me so.

In one instance two mature ladies, one white Cuban the other white Puerto Rican were talking about their grandchildren. The Puerto Rican woman talked about how her new grandson looks like his father with his beautiful blonde hair. She went on to mention that it was too bad that he didn't get the blue eyes also. To most, that may appear to be no big deal but think about it. In either subtle or maybe even not so subtle ways, this blonde-haired child will be treated more favorably because of his hair color. The grandmother will, of course, deny it, but it will happen.

Then, just yesterday, one of my well-degreed colleagues, a Black American woman in her mid-thirties commented to another Black colleague on how beautiful hair was since she had it "straight now." Wow, that reminded me of several instances I've seen when a woman's 'makeover' includes straightening her naturally curly hair. I know of Asians who display the same self-hatred and acquiescence to the Eurocentric standard of beauty. When will the madness stop?

If I could, I'd take all the children in the universe, give them a hug and tell them how beautiful they are. Each and every one of them --- the darkest ebony Black skin, pale almost transparent skin, wide noses, kinky hair, short, tallest of tall, fat, skinny as a stick, long hair bald, slanted eyes, blue eyes, brown eyes --- all of them.

It just burns me so when children are fed those messages of self-hatred. It's time to stop it. If nothing else, it's my personal mission to diffuse it when I can by telling every child --- especially children of color --- how beautiful they are. It's a small gesture but prayerfully it will be mirrored by the children I come in contact with so that seed of self-love will be planted and grow.

What in the hell was Wesley Snipes thinking?

Actor Wesley Snipes is not MIA, he is filming in Namibia and has been there since August. The Internal Revenue Service had been looking for him for failure to fil;e and fraudulent income tax forms filed. The indictment alleges that Snipes failed to file federal income tax returns from 1999 through 2004 and conspired with two accomplices to file two amended returns for Snipes for 1996 and 1997, fraudulently claiming tax refunds of almost $12 million.

Of course Snipes has been the brunt of jokes but this is far from funny. Everyone knows that you cant play with the IRS. Brother Wes best be calling in some help and praying for real. Peace.

Uli was robbed!

By now everyone knows that Jeffrey was named winner of Project Runway Season 3. Jeffrey's designs were OK. A couple of them were out of place and his signature design made the model look fat. Uli's designs were so much better that I won't watch next season as the assertion that the contest is rigged has surely been proven.

Let's talk Michael. His designs were OK but a bit ghetto fabulous. I love Michael and so do many viewers as he was voted fan favorite to win. Micheal will be great if he expands his horizons. He's only 28 and he's self-taught. So kudos to him.

Let's talk models. We saw some of the models from the regular season shows but some of the runway show models looked awful. You know it's true. Look at the photos. I'm not being mean, just real. Project Runway could do a whole lot better in that category.

Project Runway will continue, just without me as a viewer. I really have much more productive things to do with my time. Carry on. Make it work. Auf'd.

New Respect for Nick Cannon

He's grown up right before our eyes. It's hard to believe that Nick Cannon is 26 years-old. Showing wisdom beyond his years, Cannon appears to have the right tactic in spreading the gospel to young people. Check this story from EURweb.com

MINISTER NICK CANNON?: Cannon talks about his purpose in the entertainment biz

We see him cracking jokes as the host of MTV's wildly popular Wild'n Out, modeling his personal style on the pages of Black Enterprise (September '06) or in a music video.

To boot, he has a number of respectable movies under his belt. "The Cannon" (Nick that is) may have starred in Underclassman, but he has exploded into the upper ranks of young Hollywood. The 26-year old multi-talented star says that his success is a blessing more than anything else.

Nick comes from a long line of ministers and believes he is carrying on their Godly legacy in the field of entertainment.

"I'm trying to follow in their footsteps in an different aspect ... entertainment is my ministry."

When asked to expound on his perspective Cannon replied: "I believe it's my duty to be a light in the entertainment field and you can kinda stand firm and show people you stand for certain things. It's definitely a form of ministry in many different ways."

Cannon deals with the often insulting humor and curse words on Wildn' Out by making sure he does not act like his peers.

"... it's not my duty to pass judgment, but to stand firm in what I do. If you watch closely, the way I carry myself and my behavior is a little different than everybody else. And that's all I can do is continue to be that example more than stepping out there and claim to be holier than thou.. . .but we are supposed to strive to be perfect because we're supposed to be trying to be Christ-like. And that's what I believe."

Cannon is narrow in stature, but keeps an open mind about bringing the unsaved into the Christian fold. "You gotta keep the doors of the Kingdom open with open arms and let people come as they are ... you gotta be wise as a serpent, but gentle as a dove. That's what I'm trying to do. "

Orange Brawl Fallout

Thirty-one football players from FIU and UM have been suspended for one game. FIU is hardest hit with 18 players suspended, 11 of them starters. Of UM's 13 players suspended, only three are starters.

Of note is today's UM Board of Trustees meeting where Saturday's melee is sure to be discussed. UM Head Football Coach Larry Coker's control of his team is in doubt.

One young lady who attended the game commented on how 'exciting it was'. Exciting? Wow, that's what years of "The Jerry Springer Show' does to our children. No wonder they were not embarrassed. No wonder the we're out of control. It's our fault as parents and adults. Heaven help us.

From Sports Illustrated

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- After reviewing a sideline-clearing brawl between players from Miami and Florida International, officials from both schools and their conferences on Sunday announced the suspension of 31 players -- 13 from the Hurricanes, and 18 from FIU.

Each suspended player must sit out his team's next game for taking part in the ugly melee that marred the teams' Saturday matchup. Miami plays at Duke on Saturday, FIU plays at Alabama Oct. 28.

More sanctions are still possible, officials from both schools said Sunday night.

"These suspensions send a clear and definitive message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated," said Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford.

The ACC and Miami (4-2) suspended Carlos Armour, Chris Barney, James Bryant, Tyrone Byrd, DajLeon Farr, Ryan Hill, Bruce Johnson, Charlie Jones, Brandon Meriweather, Brian Monroe, Derrick Morse, Randy Phillips and Anthony Reddick.

"I don't have many bad days," Miami coach Larry Coker said Sunday morning, long before the suspensions were announced shortly after 10 p.m. "This is a bad day. And last night was a bad night."

Meanwhile, officials from the Sun Belt Conference and FIU (0-7) suspended Michael Alls, Scott Bryant, Roland Clark, Michael Dominquez, John Ellis, Cory Fleming, Reginald Jones, Marshall McDuffie Jr., Robert Mitchell, Quintin Newman, Luis Pena, Jarvis Penerton, Julian Reams, Lionell Singleton, Chris Smith, Samuel Smith, Mannie Wellington and Chandler Williams.

"There is no place in higher education for the type of conduct exhibited," Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Wright Waters said.

There were many instances of heated words being exchanged during -- and even before -- the game. But shortly after halftime, unsportsmanlike turned into unruly.

Bryant pointed at the FIU bench and bowed to the crowd after catching a touchdown pass with 9 minutes left in the third quarter. Moments later, FIU's Chris Smith wrestled Miami holder Matt Perrelli to the ground and punched him.

McDuffie kicked Perrelli in the helmet. Morse jumped onto the Smith-Perrelli pile, Singleton followed and tried to punch the Hurricanes' Calais Campbell -- and benches began to empty.

"You've got to back up each other," said Miami quarterback Kyle Wright. "You're not just going to sit out there and let guys get beat up."

Several players from both sides appeared to throw punches. Meriweather was seen attempting to stomp on FIU players, while an injured Golden Panther swung a crutch menacingly at several Miami players.

Meanwhile, Reddick charged across the field, helmet raised over his head, and slammed it into Mitchell. "Disgraceful," Coker said.

The suspensions come at a terrible time for Miami, which has six ACC games remaining -- and probably needs five wins to even have a chance at playing for the conference title.

Yes, Miami is playing winless Duke next week, not anyone in the ACC's upper echelon. Still, the Hurricanes will have to play that game without their best kick returner (Johnson), their second-best running back (Jones), two starters in the secondary (Meriweather and Randy Phillips), their right guard (Morse) and their punter (Monroe).

Plus, starting right tackle Jason Fox and linebacker Jon Beason were injured Saturday night and their availability isn't known for the Duke game.

So all of a sudden, what could have been an easy game doesn't look so easy anymore.

And it's only worse for FIU -- which would have been a big underdog at Alabama anyway, but now will visit the Crimson Tide without nearly half of its regular starting lineup.

"I can promise you," FIU coach Don Strock said, "that this will never happen again."

The fight marred what was supposed to be the beginning of a rivalry between two schools with players who grew up playing each other on high school fields in South Florida. Knowing that, Coker said he expected tensions to be high.

"I was very concerned about this and we addressed it a lot of times throughout the week," Coker said. "As the game started to get away from them, I was very, very concerned that something like this might happen." It's the third on-field incident involving the Hurricanes in their last seven games. And there's been plenty of off-the-field ones, too.

-- Several Miami players fought with LSU players following the Tigers' 40-3 win in the Peach Bowl, a brawl that quickly escalated into an out-of-control melee in the tunnel leading from the field.

-- Shortly before the Miami-Louisville game Sept. 16, virtually the entire Hurricanes' roster jumped on the Cardinals logo at midfield -- an act widely viewed as a taunting gesture. Afterward, several Miami players chided teammates for their involvement in that incident.

-- A Miami player was shot outside his home shortly before training camp began in what players contend was a robbery attempt. Meriweather returned fire at the alleged assailants. Police said he acted legally.

-- Wide receiver Ryan Moore, who was sent home from the Peach Bowl for violating team rules, was suspended for the first two games of 2006 for other violations. He is expected to be charged this week with misdemeanors stemming from an August fight with a woman. He hasn't played this season.

And now, perhaps, comes the worst blow of them all, a melee that was out of hand within seconds of starting. Despite all that, Coker -- who has been under fire from alumni and Miami fans throughout the season, and whose job security seems to be a constant source of speculation around Coral Gables -- bristled at the suggestion that he doesn't have control of his team.

"I do have a grip on this program," Coker said. "Don't ever doubt that. Don't ever doubt that."
