Meek Announces Candidacy for Senate

It's official, U.S. Congressman Kendrick B. Meek has announced his candidacy for the Senate seat to be vacated by retiring Florida Senator Mel Martinez in 2010. If elected, Meek would become the first black senator to represent Florida.

It's reported that Meek has hired a former Barack Obama strategist.

A crowded field of contenders is expected including Florida chief Financial Officer Alex Sink; State Senator Dan Gelber; U.S. Rep. Ron Klein; former FL House Speaker Marco Rubio and Governor Charlie Crist.
