Should Lovelle Mixon Have Been Out On Parole?

Even as they grapple with budget cuts, California state leaders will surely be compelled to strengthen parole laws and not reduce corrections staff by as much as originally expected because of four police officers shot dead by a man on parole. Lovelle Mixon had been incarcerated on weapons charges and was stopped Saturday for a routine traffic violation.

The intense desperation that would drive a person to such murder and mayhem is all so unbelievably tragic. It's understood that being a cop is dangerous but for all four to be shot because of one situation is unimaginable.

With the drama Bay Area police have to deal with because of the Oscar Grant shooting, it must be difficult for the community to deal with this situation also. My heart goes out to all of the families left to pick up the pieces after this latest devastation.

The officers killed were: Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40; Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43; and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35 and Officer John Hege.

Mixon is reported to have an extensive criminal record. One can only wonder whether perceived liberal incarceration laws could have prevented this tragedy. Legislators will find it difficult to oppose measures that could have prevented this tragedy.

New York Post Chimpanzee Editorial Cartoon: Still Looking for the Humor

Sharpton-lee The furor over the New York Post chimpanzee editorial cartoon is far from over for me. You see, I was immediately angered by it for several reasons; its racist connotation being one of them.

I observed executives from the Post attempt to deflect the backlash from the cartoon to protest leader, Rev. Al Sharpton. I don’t always agree with the Reverend but that was just wrong on their part. I also heard their so-called apology and learned of the company’s internal turmoil because of the cartoon.

I tried to understand the perspective of folks, even blacks, who thought the cartoon wasn’t as bad as the publicity that exploded around it. I still wasn’t able to make that stretch. I really tired objectivity but it is what it is.

You know, even if you don’t think the cartoon was racist, there was no humor to be made of a woman tragically disfigured by a chimpanzee and the death of that chimpanzee. There was no humor in two police officers shooting an animal. Was the animal a representation of President Obama? Perhaps it was supposed represent Nancy Pelosi or even Congress. It's just wrong.

There have been calls for the firing of the Post’s editor. I support that unequivocally. I also support the demand for a real public apology from the New York Post.

It was pointed out that President Obama and New York Gov. Paterson did not make a big deal of the situation. Gov. Paterson accepted the Post’s apology. Well, my response to that is, “Did you expect them to go Eric Holder and say what they really feel? I think not.”

This situation could be over quickly. The Post’s lame attempt at an apology is far more acquiescence than they’ve offered in the past. I do hope the NAACP and other civil rights organizations will not cave under the pressure.

Rev. Sharpton’s spotlight on the media influence is an issue that definitely deserves more coverage but by which media outlet since he owns so many.

Peanuts: Eat at Your Own Risk

Peanut-caution Boiled peanuts, roasted peanuts, peanut butter on saltine crackers, peanut butter cookies, and frozen Snickers bar: those are just a few ways I used to enjoy eating peanuts but not anymore.

Thanks to Peanut Corporation of America and the salmonella found in their products, it will be a long time before I eat peanut butter again. The conditions described in the plant were criminal. The company’s leaders should be jailed; no question about it.

Peanut Corporation owner Stewart Parnell, repeatedly invoked his right not to incriminate himself when questioned by the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee. In spite of the 600 people sickened and possible nine deaths linked to the salmonella contamination, Parnell defiantly refused to answer any questions; that’s unconscionable.

The sad reality is that Peanut Corp represents such a small percentage of the peanut industry. Their misdeeds has jeopardized an entire industry. As a consumer, there is nothing that leads me to believe that the conditions at Peanut Corp are different than other peanut processing plants. Perhaps the stimulus plan includes funding for more inspectors of our food supply. It may be time for meto seriously consider growing my own food.

Until this peanut situation is resolved to the satisfaction of the American people or is no longer highlighted in the media and the American people forget, the peanut industry will suffer. What's next?

Locked Up but Not for Life: O.J. Simpson Goes to Prison

Simpson O. J. Simpson and Charles Stewart were sentenced yesterday by Las Vegas judge Jackie Glass. Charged with twelve counts including armed robbery and kidnapping, Simpson was sentenced to up to 33 years in prison. He must serve at least nine years before he’s eligible for parole.

In delivering the sentences, Judge Glass made the point several times that the sentencing was based on the current trial and was not impacted by Simpson’s murder trial in 1996. It’s really hard to believe that the previous trial did not influence the Vegas trial but it would be difficult to prove otherwise.

If you think me one of the folks who celebrated when Simpson was found not guilty in the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman you’re wrong. I do believe the occurrences leading up to the Vegas trial and the circumstances surrounding it a bit contrived, questionable and overkill. I mean who records conversations between people who are supposed to be friends unless there is an ulterior motive?

That aside, I’ve always thought Simpson should have been locked up for something from the double murder trial. His actions or more appropriate, antics, were further proof of his cry for help.

Pick something --- his domestic issues with Nicole look-alike girlfriend, Christie Prody; whack videos; theft of cable service or especially that book, If I Did It. I mean, really. That’s just the foolishness I can think of off the top of my head.

The harsh words of the judge and frequent use of the word “stupid” when referencing Simpson was a stark contrast to the dignity he displayed during the double murder trial. It was truly pathetic.

As expected, Ron Goldman’s dad and sister expressed their feeling of vindication for his death. Is it just me or was anyone else ticked off by the statement from Denise Brown,"It is very sad to think that an individual who had it all, an amazing career, beautiful wife and two precious children has ended up like this." Excuse me, before marrying Nicole, O.J. had another beautiful wife, Marguerite. Before Sydney and Justin with Nicole, there were three precious children --- Arnelle, Jason and Aaren with Marguerite. Surely, she didn’t intentionally ignore O.J.’s other wife and children; all are in pain except little Aaren who passed away as a toddler in 1979.

The saga of O.J. Simpson is far from over because his lawyers will appeal this last case. At 61, one would think O.J. Simpson wouldn’t find himself in this situation. With all of the opportunities he was afforded it’s unbelievable he’s messed up his life so much.  Will prison afford him time for retrospect and repentance? Only time will tell.

Bloody Black Friday at Wal-mart in NY

A temporary worker was trampled and killed at a Long Island, NY Wal-mart store. Hundreds of people stampeded the door, trampled the worker and even tore doors off the hinges. Those big metal doors torn off the hinges? What kind of foolishness is that? Since shoppers have said there was no organization for controlling the crowd or any security present, Wal-mart is likely looking at a lawsuit. A pregnant shopper was hospitalized because of the turmoil but it seems that she was okay.

Shoppers were said to have stepped on the worker or over him or around him. "Savages" was a term used to describe the shoppers.

What was your Black Friday experience?

Verizon Fires Workers Who Breached Obama's Cell Phone Records

Verizon-wireless-logo

The Verizon Wireless employees who breached the cell phone records of President-elect Barack Obama, have been fired according to reports from company management.

It seems the employees were hired to do customer care and authorized to access customer records unless specifcally directed by the customer.

Verizon management really had no choice in this matter if they were to retain customer confidence. It was also reiterated that the cell phone records compromised were for a simple flip phone and not for Obama's Blackberry or other sophisticated equipment. No e-mails or voice messages were accessed.

Putting the Skinhead Assassination Plot in Perspective

Daniel Cowart and Paul Schlesselman are the latest whack jobs to have their 15 minutes of fame as a result of their plans to kill 88 black people (14 by beheading) and ultimately killing Barack Obama.   Now, we all knew this demographic of nutbags would show themselves eventually.

I was a bit perturbed by the initial media reports indicating that a plot to assassinate Senator Obama had been foiled. Additional research of the situation showed that these two guys had planned to kill 88 people before killing Obama. 88!! Hello, I do believe the headlines should have read something like this, Racially-Motivated Mass Murder Spree and Obama Assassination Plot Foiled. That may not seem like a big deal but it accurately frames the situation. It wasn't just a concern for Barack Obama, it was a concern for black people, period.

It's highly unlikely these guys could have carried out their plan, they'd "met" only a month ago via the internet and planned to don a white top hat and tails while they carried out the murders. Interesting.

Plots such as this are intended to intimidate. I imagine blacks are supposed to be too afraid to vote but that doesn't seem to have affected the massive turnout for early voting in this country.

Cowart and Schlesselman are far too young to buy into this hatred foolishness. These guys don't know the racial struggles this country has overcome except through textbooks or movies. A killing rampage in this country would accomplish what exactly? A few minutes of media attention?

The reality of this presidential election is that Barack Obama has rallied millions of people to support his candidacy. Those people are a diverse group that represent the true face of America. A couple of guys like Cowart and Schlesselman won't defeat the rest of America.

Victoria Osteen not guilty

Victoria Osteen, co-pastor of Lakewood Church and wife of Joel Osteen was found not guilty of assault in a lawsuit filed by Continental Airlines flight attendant Sharon Brown. The jury deliberated for about three hours before deciding on the verdict.

One juror felt that something happened between the two women but it didn't rise to the level of legal recourse. Needless to say, Mrs. Osteen was pleased and never lost her faith that the verdict would be in her favor.

Foolishness in the Land of Mickey: Vandals Paint Anti-Obama Messages on City Vehicles

I guess this is a sign of what we'll deal with for the remainder of the presidential campaign. It seems that some 60 vehicles belonging to the City of Orlando were vandalized with spray paint. Some of the vehicles had anti-Obama messages painted on them even with racial epithets. The gas tank door was open on many of the vehicles but damage to the gas tanks was not reported.

It's interesting that more than a hundred business cards were left with messages critical of Barack Obama and John McCain but complimentary of Hillary Clinton. Some folks just really need to let it go. It's obvious that someone really has a bug up their butt about Barack Obama's candidacy.

I really hate to see Florida shown in such a negative light --- again --- but it is what it is. Since Barack Obama couldn't be beat based on his platform I guess someone's going for old-fashioned fear and intimidation of voters.

Now, it seems likely that the perpetrators should be caught. One would think there should be security measures in place to at least capture the vandals on camera. The vehicles were parked near City Hall.

There have been other incidents of vandalism of Obama's campaign headquarters; those incidents did not garner the media coverage of the Orlando incident.

Texas Court Rules Against State in Seizure of FLDS Children

The 3rd Court of Appeals in Texas ruled that the State removed the 400 children from the polygamist sect Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints without sufficient evidence and authority. It is likely the children will be returned to their parents soon.

Some of the mothers spoke on how their children have been separated and in foster care with families sometimes hundreds of miles apart from each other. One can only imagine what must be going through those children's minds.

Although the beliefs of the sect differ from those of many of us, it is difficult not to sympathize with the challenges some mothers face in visiting their children, especially those still breastfeeding.

This case is very interesting and the State of Texas is feeling the stinging criticism. The State refutes many of the claims of the FLDS mothers. Former members of the sect say there was widespread abuse and forced marriages between young girls and significantly older men. Stay tuned.
