We Can't Turn Back Now [VIDEO]

Five years ago presidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama ignited a fire in Americans yearning for change in our government. Americans yearning for a better life…better opportunities…jobs…education. Hope. Change.

Unlike any presidential candidate before or since, Obama’s obvious racial difference was not the factor that endeared him to so many.  No, Barack Obama’s American story was the glue that weaved him through the hearts and minds of so many Americans who could identify with the challenges he overcame to attain a comfortable lifestyle in these United States of America.

Now five years later, after a historic victory, this man we know as Barack Hussein Obama, 44th President of the United States of America, remains the same intelligent, dignified, level-headed leader this nation needs. President Obama’s tenure has been met with such vitrol, disrespect and unsuccessful attempts to destroy this nation, it is almost unbelievable. These attempts have not come from outside but from within the leadership of this very nation who claim to be patriots.

Now is the time to continue to move America forward with four more years of an Obama presidency. We are on the right track by addressing economic disparity and helping the poor and middle-class among other issues. We can’t turn back now.

The Coronation of Bishop Eddie Long, Not a Good Move [VIDEO]

Long coronation 3

UPDATE: Bishop Eddie Long has apologized to the Anti-Defamation League for the inappropriate use of Jewish religious symbols during the coronation ceremony at New Birth.

I finally saw the controversial video of Bishop Eddie Long being anointed a king at New Birth Church in Lithonia, GA. Rabbi Ralph Messer who is unlike any rabbi I’ve ever met or even seen conducted this anointing or coronation ceremony.

You have to watch the video to see the show and that’s exactly what it was. At one point Long is wrapped in a torah. He is also seated and in chair, lifted and carried by four men as if he is on a throne. The sight is amazing; I understand why there was so much controversy.

I have largely not taken a public position on Bishop Long’s challenges of the sexual scandal or his marital strife. I can only say that this latest “crowning” incident does nothing to help him in the eyes of reasonable, prudent individuals. This is just sad and disgusting.

Moreover, since this crowning ceremony used sacred symbols of the Jewish religion, an even larger audience of religious practitioners offended by his actions will now form opinions about Long’s troubles --- and not in a good way.

By the way, Bishop Eddie Long is now king of what?

Bill Press on Newt Gingrich: He's Not a Great Debater [VIDEO]

Here is a video of Bill Press guest hosting the Countdown with Keith Olbermann Show. So, a CNN producer warmed up the crowd at the presidential debate in Charleston, SC. encouraging the audience to make as much noise as possible as if the debate was The Jerry Springer Show? Shame on CNN.

You know it really doesn’t matter who the Republican presidential nominee is, President Obama will clean their clock.

President Obama's State of the Union Address 01/24/2012 [VIDEO] [TRANSCRIPT]

President Barack Obama delivered a rousing State of the Union address last night that addressed a myriad of topics from the economy to education to healthcare to bipartianship and Republican obstructionism. When the President mentioned the takedown of Osama bin Laden early in his address, it was apparent that he was in the zone.

Some criticize the President by attacking his gift of public speaking others accuse him of being divisive. That's a shame. The President spoke to the heart of the issues that Americans face every day. He expressed the frustration that Americans feel about government and the partisanship bickering. The President challenged Congress to do their job.

Here are the video and text of the President's speech.

Remarks by the President in State of the Union Address

United States Capitol
Washington, D.C.

9:10 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT:  Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow Americans:

Last month, I went to Andrews Air Force Base and welcomed home some of our last troops to serve in Iraq.  Together, we offered a final, proud salute to the colors under which more than a million of our fellow citizens fought -- and several thousand gave their lives.

We gather tonight knowing that this generation of heroes has made the United States safer and more respected around the world.  (Applause.)  For the first time in nine years, there are no Americans fighting in Iraq.  (Applause.)  For the first time in two decades, Osama bin Laden is not a threat to this country.  (Applause.)  Most of al Qaeda’s top lieutenants have been defeated.  The Taliban’s momentum has been broken, and some troops in Afghanistan have begun to come home.

Red Tails: An Epic Tale of Patriotism and Courage

Red Tails Poster

I went to see Red Tails yesterday with my Dad. He asked about movie times and where it was playing so I know that was my cue to be a good daughter and take him. After being married 58 years, Dad still misses my Mom who transitioned almost two years ago.  Whenever he wants to do something or go somewhere I try to oblige him.

I don’t like going out to the movies. First of all, there are no theaters in my neighborhood so anywhere I go requires at least a 10 or 15 minute drive. Then there’s the parking, expensive admission and way overpriced food at the concession stand.  Not to mention the fact that I usually have lots to do and going to the movies takes a real big chunk out of my day.

Anyhoo, we saw the movie at the Aventura AMC24. We arrived just in time for the previews to start. My Dad had not been to a movie theater in at least 25 years. He said the previews were too long. The movie showtime was scheduled for 4:15 p.m. and that’s the time he expected it to start. The movie started at 4:30.

The opening scenes of the movie explicitly indicate the movie is ‘inspired’ by true events. If you expect a documentary about the Tuskegee Airmen, this is not the movie for you. Does it touch upon the racism the men of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps endured? Yes, it does. It also highlights the assumptions of intellectual inferiority of the black pilots and their relegation assignments that did not have any impact on the War.

This movie is also entertaining if you enjoy the rock ‘em sock’em shoot’em up special effects producer George Lucas is known for in his Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies. There are portions of the movie that are predictable and others that are not. The character development of the men was good but could have been a little more in-depth. The relationship between Joe and Sofia was a tad clumsy but a contrast to the fighting and racism.

I highly recommend this movie. Kudos to George Lucas and to director Anthony Hemingway for a movie that will be remembered for a long time. My deep appreciation to the Tuskegee Airmen for the obstacles they overcame and the lives they saved. There are a few Tuskegee Airmen still alive today. If you know them or they live in your community, please say thank you.

In spite of the cost of the afternoon — admission ($29.00), concession ($24.78) and valet parking ($11), I would have spent twice that to see my Dad smile and have him talk about the Tuskegee Airmen and his military experience for the rest of the evening.

Go see ‘Red Tails’ and make it a family outing.

Defending Our Voting Rights

While too many Americans are consumed with mind-numbing, brain paralyzing activities  (reality TV, video games, etc.) and NOT paying attention to what’s really happening, the powers that be in the United States of america are busy trampling on our civil rights through the implementation of egregious voter suppression laws. Wake up and pay attention.

This video is by the NAACP but if you are not black and think this doesn’t apply to you, you are wrong. Watch the entire video. Make sure your voting privileges are in order. Encourage others to vote. This is a serious matter.

Gloria Cain Does Her Version of Stand by Your Man [VIDEO]

A deep sigh as we are subjected to presidential candidate Herman Cain’s wife of 43 years coming to the defense of her husband. We have seen this dance many times before and know how it will likely end. It’s a sad but seemingly necessary part of the political campaign game when a candidate is caught up in a sex scandal. Gloria Cain says her husband "totally respects women" and would have to have a split personality to have done the things he is accused of.

Herman Cain’s poll numbers are dropping and will likely drop even more. Sharon Bialeck’s former boyfriend, Dr. Victor Zuckerman, a Louisiana pediatrician, basically called Cain a liar about not remembering her. It may be time for Cain to cut bait.

Harry Belafonte on King's Dream, Leadership and President Obama

Belafonte on piers morganI like Harry Belafonte. I admired him first as an entertainer. When I was a young child, I recall him as one of the few blacks on television. Of course I loved to hear him sing that infectious song, “Day-O” and watch how it caused folks to get up and dance. Harry Belafonte was my introduction to calypso music which I found out later was actually Jamaican mento music but let me not digress.

Unfortunately, I did not appreciate Harry Belafonte, the humanitarian and civil rights activist, until much later in my life. I really like Harry Belafonte; well, as much as one can from afar as I’ve never actually met the man. His recent interview on Piers Morgan shows the activist, humanitarian and gentleman he continues to be. You see, in his interview with Morgan he voices doubt and concern about President Obama’s motivation in office. It's important to know that opinion is preceded by a question from Morgan that I’ve asked myself several times when it comes to leadership in this country. Fearlessness in our so-called leaders and elected officials and motivation to just do the right thing because it’s the right thing, appear to have been replaced with political strategy and “playing the game”.

I’m not doing a good job of framing Belafonte’s position so you just have to see it for yourself. I was most impressed by Belafonte’s comments and his obvious concern for President Obama. Juxtaposed against the vitriolic public discourse spewed by Dr. Cornel West and Tavis Smiley, Belafonte’s comments elicit a much different reaction and prayerfully consideration by the President and his circle of advisors.

Save Our Children: Why We Must End Poverty and Hunger Now [VIDEO]

Please take the time to watch this entire video. Don't multi-task while watching or you may miss some very important information on the slides and pictures.

One of the most compelling illustrations during this speech is the one below. Look at the stark difference between the brain scans of two three-year old children. Is there any reason why our children from economically impoverished family situations will ever perform as desired on the various high stakes examinations in our nation's schools?

An American Crime: The True Story of the Murder of Sylvia Likens [VIDEO]

An_american_crime_poster

I surfed across a creepy movie on the Sleuth Channel called An American Crime. I tried not to focus on it because I was in "Sunday afternoon my weekend is almost over" multi-tasking mode but I found myself drawn to it even more after learning it was based on a true story.

The movie, based on the abuse and murder of Sylvia Likens in Indianapolis in 1965, premiered on Showtime in May 2008 after production issues by First Look Productions. The stars of the movie include Catherine Keener as Gertrude Baniszewski and Ellen Page as Sylvia Likens.  Keener received and Emmy nomination for her performance.

An American Crime is haunting and intriguing. The real-life facts of the abuse, torture and murder of Sylvia Marie Likens are more horrifying than the movie. To know that Sylvia was not only tortured by the adult in whose care she and her sister Jenny were placed, but also at the hands of children was particularly nauseating.
